Monte Vista is a K-6 elementary school located in La Crescenta, California, and part of the Glendale Unified School District.  The staff, students, and parents work together splendidly, and all of us are extremely proud of Monte Vista and its accomplishments.
These accomplishments include the National Blue Ribbon Award, multiple California Distingu
ished School Awards, and excellent scores and status in both API (state Academic Proficiency Index) and AYP (national Adequate Yearly Progress).  Our students routinely receive top ratings in individual and group activities and competitions including math, art, and robotics.
As part of Glendale Unified School District we participate in a process to select and target an academic area.  Our focus is Reading Comprehension.  Teachers and students have enjoyed the depth and enrichment that this process has brought to reading.  Within reading comprehension we have been working on asking and forming questions as strategies to engage us and increase our understanding.
A wide variety of enrichment opportunities are provided to students during and after school.  Some of these include Chorus, Instrumental Music, Meet the Masters, after school classes on a variety of topics for various targeted groups, Musical Theatre, Robotics, Math Club, Talent Show, classroom performances and presentations, field trips, and assemblies.
     Current
ly, approximately 575 students attend Monte Vista.  These students represent many family and community members who are also part of the Monte Vista educational support system.
     Our certificat
ed teachers and classified staff are truly outstanding.  They are dedicated and hard-working individuals who are highly skilled and continually work to further develop their skills and approaches to benefit the students of Monte Vista.  Our goal is creating and maintaining a warm, safe, nurturing environment with high expectations for all.  Character education is incorporated into the school calendar and recognized at monthly assemblies.  We work with parents to shape behaviour so that our students develop personal responsibility as well as academic skills.
Monte Vista parents and community provide and extremely high level of support and interaction.  Along with the school staff they plan and support many exciting and enriching activities and projects.  Parents are involved in many capacities including PTA, Foundation, School Site Council, and in the classroom.
Our campus is beautiful in design and upkeep.  Walkways are lined with plantings and provide a welcoming feeling to all.  School wide renovations occurred in 2007 as part of Measure K.  In additional to beautiful surroundings we work to provide students with skills they will need in the future.  In May, 2009, our computer lab was completely updated.  Our teachers regularly work to become knowledgeable about new trends in technology to better equip our students.
     For the
2010-2011 school year we will be emphasizing Monte Vista as a Lean, Green, and Safe Machine.  We are supporting an active lifestyle that includes exercise, such as walking to school, promoting our beautiful gardens and the community as part of the green movement, and looking to keep students and our community safe.
